Future // Prepare NOW if in the mid-Atlantic region.

As a Virginian and as a defense industry specialist, am very concerned about the impact of Congress not passing balanced budgets or able to get its (our) financial house in order.

The failure of the Super Committee to reach agreement means that there will be mandatory budgetary cuts in defense spending beginning in FY2013, thus personnel cuts, per a study done by Stephen S. Fuller, Ph.D., of George Mason University for the aerospace industry.

FY2013 budget cuts being October 2012, just barely 10 months from now.

Virginia – we are at greatest risk in the country. Industry studies guesstimate that 123,000 Virginia jobs will be lost directly due to these cuts. Yet the impact will be much larger as Virginia and our neighboring states make up almost 20% of total cuts: 209,724 jobs are on the chopping block.

To put things into perspective, Baltimore is closer to Prince William County, Virginia (the southern edge of northern Virginia) than is Richmond our capital (52 vs 88 miles).

Most Maryland military bases are between Baltimore and the Virginia line.

Defense jobs at risk in the mid-Atlantic region due to mandatory defense cuts: 209,724

Delaware 662

District of Columbia 14,129

Maryland 36,227

New Jersey 23,870

North Carolina 11,019

Virginia 122,770

West Virginia 1,047

Many of the jobs in those neighboring states are filled by Virginians, and vice versa to some degree.

New Jersey does not border Virginia but it has a major impact on the function of many Maryland bases (such as Fort Meade) which in turn has major impact on many of the military functions and funding in Virginia ~ Fort Meade is home to the NSA, America’s largest intelligence agency and a major driver of the Virginia economy.

Life is good on most days. Seems though that change is constant.

Change doesn’t bother me. I expect change. I expect lots of change. I expect change at speeds that may seem to overwhelm and to even create obsolescence of products, skills and organization.

We may not be able to stop change but we can channel its energy.

The video below is by Microsoft and presents a vision of information interaction within the near future – less than five years from now. Most of the concepts envisioned already exist so … prepare for change.

Thanks to Shane Brooks for bringing this video to my attention.

According to Forrester Research analyst Noel Yuhanna in his most recent database security market overview report, the database security market is expected to grow by 20 percent through 2014. Yuhanna pegs the current market at $755 million including new licenses and support, database auditing, real-time protection, data masking, vulnerability assessment, and database encryption across all database management system (DBMS) platforms. As that figure grows to $1.2 billion in 2014, Yuhanna says to expect continued consolidation in the market.

How do professionals starting their federal careers feel about the agencies they serve, and how well are those agencies managing their new class of public servants? In an era of career flexibility and job fluidity, what does it take to build a federal government workforce of the future?

These are the questions the Partnership for Public Service and Deloitte set out to understand in this Best Places to Work in the Federal Government® snapshot analysis—based on the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) 2010 employee survey.

The good news for government is that a majority of new employees under the age of 30 report high levels of overall satisfaction when it comes to their specific jobs and agencies (table 1). The three agencies that top the overall satisfaction rankings are the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The government-wide overall satisfaction index score1 for this cohort of new employees is 75 percent (out of 100), 10 points above the score for employees of all ages employed for any length of time.2 Out of 26 agencies, only four scored below 70 percent.

In a time of budget cuts and hiring freezes, the need to attract young professionals and subsequently retain them is paramount to a high-performing federal government. OMB estimates that 60,000 federal workers are set to retire by year’s end. To prevent a brain drain of highly skilled and educated employees, the government must work to attract young talent into its ranks and be seen as a great place to launch and build a career. These emerging professionals potentially offer a diversity of skill sets and innovative ideas that could expand agencies’ overall expertise, and better represent the population they serve. Ideally, they are future federal leaders helping agencies to fulfill their missions.
